Top Ten Tuesday: More Books I’m Glad I Had to Read in School

August 28, 2018 Comments : 10

A few weeks ago, I posted about ten books I was so thankful I was assigned to read in school. It was so hard to narrow down my list, because I was lucky enough to have a really stellar education – especially with regard to literature. Luckily we have this back-to-school freebie topic today (yay!) so I’m sharing my next ten books that I had to read in school and I’ll be forever grateful that I did.

The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood
The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck
The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion
Love Medicine by Louise Erdrich
The Odyssey by Homer

Brave New World by Aldous Huxley
One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
Beloved by Toni Morrison
A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare
The Color Purple by Alice Walker

XOXO

Wow! You read some good books at school. I found my required reading to be very inspired, so I’m pleased you had a different experience to me.

I didn’t read any of these at school-I’m glad you had a much better experience of required reading than me-the books I read at school put me off studying English any further than at GCSE.

My 9th grade English teacher was a Shakespeare buff, so we read A LOT of it. I enjoyed most of it, though! I remember reading The Handmaid’s Tale, too, and I just reread it recently.

More evidence of “Bonnie went to shitty schools” lol I’ve still only read 3 on this list. I need to get my shit together. hahahaha

Beloved was on our list this week as well! What a fun coincidence.

Wow, having Beloved and The Color Purple on a school reading list is ballsy! Props to your administrators. I’ve only read two of those as required school reading and they were both by the old white guys. I really need to up my diverse classic literature intake!

It’s a shame I haven’t read most of the books on your list! They all look pretty good. Too many pretty covers, tbh!

My husband says The Good Earth was really good, but I still haven’t read it. I still want to read The Handmaid’s Tale. For some reason, I hated One Hundred Years of Solitude. Maybe I’d like it better if I read it in Spanish. I don’t think I’m going to try though.

I would like to think I would have liked to read Handmaids Tale in school, but I don’t know if I would have appreciated it as much back then. You are so lucky you enjoyed the books you read, I can only think of about two books my entire schooling that I enjoyed and I have read far better books since then that I have looked at and just wondered why I wasn’t reading it instead of something else.
