This week is all about slumps. These days, I feel like I am always right on the edge of a slump, so the prompt is a little too on the nose for me. If I knew how to bust this, I would! So as I always do, I’m tweaking the topic to old and new favorites that I seek out when I need a break from all the lovey-dovey things I review. I get tired of kissing books sometimes, too.Β
The Classics:
The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas
The Hobbit & Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien
Puzzling Mysteries:
The Art Forger by B.A. Shapiro
Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan
Not-Quite-Horror (because I’m a wimp)
Night Film by Marisha Pessl
Blindness by Jose Saramago
Celebrity Memoirs
Yes Please by Amy Poehler
Year of Yes by Shonda Rhimes
When Everything Else Fails
This is Water by David Foster Wallace
What I Know For Sure by Oprah Winfrey
XOXO
I have had my eye on Mr. Penumbra’s 24 Hour Bookstore for so long. I need to pick it up soon. Awesome answers!

It’s one of my favorites, and took me completely by surprise. I had it around for a long while before I ever got to it myself, but I’m glad I did π
Oh this is a really diverse and interesting list. I’ll be sure to keep an eye on some of these titles. I actually listed a lot of fluff books for my TTT because it’s my go-to gender when I am dreading reading. π
I’ve read The Hobbit a long long time ago and I re-visit the funny parts when I am down. LOTR is a bit harder to read but I re-read the poems from the series because I love how they are mythical stories in poem form.

Since fluff is my primary genre, I get to go all over the place for topics like this one π
I’ve heard such good things about Yes Please. I really should try to read it! Great list. π
It’s amazing on audio, for if/when you decide to give it a go π
Some great sounding recommendations here. I keep meaning to read “Yes Please” but haven’t made time for it.
I was expecting something along the lines of Bossypants and Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? but Yes Please is really something special all on its own.
I’ve seen Mr Penumbra’s 24 Hour Bookstore everywhere, it seems, but never read it… perhaps I should check it out sometime soon! π
It’s stealthy like that, it pops up everywhere π
Definitely a hidden gem.
I definitely think reading outside your comfort zone is good for helping get past a reading slump. When everything you usually read starts to blend together and doesn’t seem exciting, it can be good to try something new!
I typically have other things in the works behind the scenes (and on goodreads) just to keep my brain from being too twitterpated all the time π
OMG! Classics are so perfect! I adored Amy Poehler’s memoir as well! Happy Tuesday! π

I love a good classic when nothing else works π
Yes Please has been on my TBR for a while now and I am so excited to listen to it on audiobook since I’ve heard so many great things about its audiobook!
The audio book is definitely the way to go, especially since Poehler narrates it. Perfection!
I really want to read that Amy Poehler one! I hear nothing but good things about it.
Definitely go for the audio, it just adds another layer of awesome to it π
A David Foster Wallace eh? I still definitely need to read Art Forger. π

Ha! Only this DFW ever. It’s very Tao of Pooh, you would dig it. And pro tip: you can listen to the whole speech on youtube π
Ooooh nice to know.

I’ve had Mr Penumbra on my shelf for ages!! I should get to it soon, really.
I was exactly the same way! What really got me, and it’s so silly, is the book glows in the dark. So even after I shut off the lights in my apartment, I could see it there taunting me on the shelf. It had to be read π
I just got a copy of Blindness. Iβm excited to read it.

I picked it up randomly for a school assignment more than a decade ago, and it’s stuck with me all this time. Definitely a great pick for when you want something really heavy (like Cormac McCarthy style heavy).
The Count of Monte Cristo is one of my favorite stories of all time. I love Edmond Dantes! You’re the first blog I’ve seen add classics to the list! What a unique way to pull out of a reading slump π
